If you love living on the Pacific Coast but are looking for a different way of life, moving from Southern California up north to Oregon is the perfect solution. Oregon has lush green forests, valleys and wide-open lands, majestic mountains and waterfalls and beautiful scenery. Residents are friendly, and the cost of living is much lower than it is in California.

According to Census data, 38,000 residents left California for Oregon in 2019. It was one of the top five states Californians moved to in 2019.

Realtors say the number one reason for moving from California to Oregon is housing prices. In Oregon, the median sales price is $381,000, compared with the median list price of $750,000 in California.

Some of the top cities to move to in Oregon are:

Portland: “the city of Roses.” Portland is Oregon’s biggest city, and the population comes in at about 650,000. California has four cities with a population bigger than that. Los Angeles itself is about six times as big as Portland.

Portland is known for its music and arts scene and food and beverage offerings. Significant growth has occurred over the past 20 years, as Portland became attractive to young people and those with college educations. About 25 percent of the households in Portland have children living in them.

Hillsboro, Gresham and Beaverton are all smaller cites just outside Portland.

The state of Oregon has the fourth-highest concentration of computer and electronics companies in the U.S. Hillsboro, with about 107,000 residents, is sometimes referred to as “the Silicon Forest” because it has more than 27,000 jobs focused on computer and electronics manufacturing. Intel is the biggest employer in Hillsboro, with 20,000 employees.

West Linn is just 11 miles from Portland and is an affluent neighborhood. Willamette Falls is the largest waterfall in the American Pacific northwest.

Salem, Oregon’s capital, is also known as “the Cherry City.” It has 169,798 residents and is only slightly larger than Eugene. If you like hiking and the beach, you’ll love living in Eugene.

Portland, Salem and Eugene are all located along the Willamette River.

In the central area of the state, the city of Bend, on the Deschutes River, has about 95,000 residents, and is one of the most competitive markets of late, according to real estate brokers.

Planning A Move To Oregon

If you relied on public transportation while living in California, you probably will need to buy a vehicle because the destinations are very spread out. However when you are in the big cities, walking and biking are encouraged. You’ll find bike lanes throughout the city.

You’ll also want to buy an umbrella and raincoat. The fall and winter are rainy, and the coast off the Pacific Ocean has about 70 sunshine days a year. The average summer temperature in Portland is 80 degrees. Inland, the temperatures are a bit cooler. On the other side of the Cascade Mountains, temperatures are warmer in the summertime.

When planning a move, it’s also important to research your moving company. Long-distance moves are regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
